How Do I Elope In Indy?
I get a lot of phone calls asking "How do I do this? How do I get married in Indy? I mean, it's my first time, I've never done it before."
Here are some of the things to get married in Indiana:
How to Obtain An Indiana Marriage License
If you already have an Indiana marriage license it's good for 60 days so you will want to plan to elope and have that license signed before it expires. You can even have it signed on the day it expires. No problem! After the license is signed, you have 30 days to return it to the county clerk that issued it.
If you don't already have a marriage license you need to make plans to get one. Marriage license are issued by the county clerks in Indiana. If you are an Indiana resident, you need to get your marriage license in the county you live in. Then, you can use that license to get married anywhere in Indiana. If you are not an Indiana resident, you need to get your marriage license from the county clerk in the county in which you are being married.
There is no waiting period to get married in Indiana.
You can pick up your marriage license and get married and file your completed marriage license all in the same day - in the same hour if you want. Both partners need to pick up the marriage license together, so you need to make plans for that. County Clerks issue marriage licenses during regular business hours. You can not obtain a marriage license on the weekend in Indiana.
I have written an entire article about how to get legally married in Indiana. It includes links to the online application and a video explanation.

Where to Elope In Indiana?
There are countless places to Elope in Indiana. I'm a mobile wedding officiant, so I go anywhere the wedding is. For an elopement you don't necessarily need a venue. Often, it's just the two of you or perhaps the two of you and a few friends or family members. Elopement ceremonies are short and sweet so if you do have guests, they probably won't need a place to sit.
Elopements can be very special weddings. You might choose to get married the same place you had your first date or where you got engaged - that's the reason many couples choose to elope on The Canal Walk in Indy. You might have a favorite park where you like to hike together or walk your dog. Brown County State Park is popular. (You can bring the dog too!) You might choose Monument Circle before dinner reservations for a great steak dinner in downtown Indianapolis. There are pretty parks and gazebos throughout Indiana, not to mention covered bridges, your grandparents farm or your own backyard. Some of the old courthouse in Indiana make beautiful backdrops for elopements and a professional photoshoot. More than one couple has been married in a cemetery!

You need someone to perform your wedding ceremony
You need a wedding officiant. Someone who is legally qualified to marry you in Indiana. That could be a judge, magistrate, justice of the peace, or any type of minister. That's what I am. I'm an ordained minister. I was ordained online over 15 years ago and have built a business as a wedding officiant.
You might know someone who got ordained online or maybe you are thinking about having a friend ordained online to marry you. I can't argue with that. I wrote an article about How To Be A Wedding Officiant In Indiana. It will help you understand what it involved in legally marrying someone help you decide if that's the right decision for you.
Some couples think they may save money by having an ordained friend marry them and other just feel more comfortable having someone they know officiate their wedding. If you are eloping on the top of a mountain, a friend may be the only one to climb that mountain with you!
I've found that some people are nervous about finding and hiring a wedding officiant believing they may be judged or have to jump through hoops with marriage counseling before a minister will marry them. And, well, that can be true. But there are many professional wedding officiants happy to perform any type of wedding ceremony you might like. You can find one that suits your personality and the type or wedding ceremony you want. There are many local wedding officiants that are bilingual and can perform your wedding ceremony in Spanish. Many of them are very well priced too.
My vote is, you should hire me to officiate your wedding!!
I love my job and I do my best to match the tone of the wedding ceremony you want. Most ceremonies are light-hearted, filled with love and a few laughs and maybe a prayer or blessing - but only if you want it. Most wedding ceremonies I perform are completely non-religious. When you book a wedding ceremony with me - even an elopement - you can choose your wedding ceremony script and even customize your wedding ceremony if you like. I have many pre written wedding ceremony scripts and hundreds of ways you can customize your ceremony yourself.
I will complete your marriage license with you and if it was issued by the Marion or Hamilton County Clerks I will file the licence for you and send you two certified copies within a week. (I usually file marriage licenses every Monday and put the copies in the mail right away. I'll text you a picture of the license and the addressed envelope when I do.)
I'll travel to anywhere where you want to get married with an hours drive from Fisher, IN for $150. That includes all of Hamilton County and Marion County and most of Johnson, Hendricks, Hancock, Delaware and Madison counties too. If you put the address of your wedding in Google Maps and put zip code 46037 as the starting point and the drive is less than 60 minutes. It's included in the $150 price.
Brown County Elopements or weddings as well as Monroe County and the Bloomington area are $250 Monday-Thursday and $350 Friday-Sunday.
I am willing to travel further but the prices will go up accordingly. It definitely depends on the day and the location of the wedding.
You Need A Wedding Ceremony Script
Wedding Ceremony Scripts have become my passion. I became a wedding officiant so I can help any couple get married any way they want to get married. That includes saying the words you want said, allowing you to say the words you want to say and making sure we don't say anything you don't want said.
Getting married is a legal contract, if you choose to approach your marriage through religion or spirituality, that's a personal choice. Prayers and sermons are not required in a wedding ceremony. I'm happy to share prayers and spiritual practices with you, but they are not required. Many people think that they are and that makes the whole idea of a wedding ceremony and hiring a wedding officiant uncomfortable. If you are a LGBTQ christian couple, I'm happy to perform a christian wedding ceremony. Secular Humanists are welcome too. I've got great ceremonies for everyone!
I want you to be comfortable during your wedding ceremony!
I want you to LOVE your wedding ceremony!
It's true, when it comes to a wedding ceremony, less is more. Most people just want to say "I Do!" exchange rings, be pronounced married, and kiss. That's all you really need in any wedding ceremony - especially an elopement ceremony. But you can take the time to choose those words with great care, passion and love. I've got everything you need to help you do that on my website Wedding Ceremony Pro. I've got some great pre written wedding ceremony scripts to choose from that may be perfect just the way they are.

Great Elopement Photography!
Almost everyone wants great pictures of their wedding. In fact, many couples are consciously choosing to have small, elopement-style weddings with the dress, the suit, hair and makeup and all the important pictures. I can recommend some great photographers I've worked with that would love to work with you to create the perfect photography package for you. Follow the links to their websites and check out their work. They are all great photographers. Small samples of their work are on this webpage but they have blogs filled with beautiful photographs of not just elopements and weddings, but engagement and family sessions too! Here are the links:
You may have a friend with a camera, you may want to set up a video camera or you might just want to take pictures with a phone - yours or mine. I'm happy to do that. Couples have chosen to Facebook Live, Snapchat and Skype. It's all good.
